Baby Shaun had just received a change when Codsworth called his masters to the living room. The news reporter on television gave the terrible news - the bombs had fallen...
Nate carried the baby as he ran with his wife, Norma, to Vault 111...
Nate's family had been listed entry to the vault. Many others were not that lucky. They barely made it to the entrance platform before the bombs fell...

Norma let the couple finish Before she approached him...
"The Minutemen are on a roll. I helped that settlement you sent me to, and cleared the way for a new settlement in the process," she said. "That's fantastic news. We're going to take back the whole Commonwealth from the bad guys at this rate," Preston said. "I took care of those Super Mutants. The settlers were relieved to to have them to worry about any more," Norma said. "Thank god. Super Mutants... civilians just don't stand a chance against them. As usual, I've got something else for you. I've gotten Word about a settlement that's being threatened by raiders."
Codsworth caught Norma in the doorway just as she attempted to leave the building...
"Mum, perhaps now is a good time?" he said. "Sure, what's on your mind?" "Oh just a Little something I'd like to get off the old proverbial chest. I just want to say what an honor it is for me to accompany you. You've no idea the horror these past two centuries have wrought. The initial destruction, not knowing if you and your family were all right. It was a relief just to find the entrance intact!" "Vault-Tec wouldn't let us take you," Norma said. "Not a single worry, mum, as I shared your priorities completely. Family safety first above all else! And yes, while it was hard at first, I was able to eventually move on. At first it was the work, busying myself day and night, and Believe me, there was plenty of it! But eventually, the work became light chores. What truly saved me was my memories, mum. Memories of you and the hubby, Young Shaun. Of your love and kindness. I soldiered on, fueled by hope that one day, if not you and the husband, that Shaun, or perhaps Shaun's Children would one day emerge." "Sorry it took so long. I only wish we could all have gotten out... as a family." "As do I, mum, as do I. It is unfortunate. I just wanted you to know how much I consider you family. I may be a mere robot to some, but I do hope you've come to see me as more," he said. "Of course, Codsworth. Don't worry, I feel the same," she said. "Miss Norma. You don't know how wonderful it is for me to hear that! I feel completely recharged. Well, enough blither blather from me. Let's get back to it, shall we?" Codsworth said.
Everyday life at Sanctuary went on. New Buildings Went up, artillery was added to the defenses, and Babies were born...
Norma was glad she had a Little spare time to spend with her daughter, Amelia.

Damn it, I'm sorry, sis.
I don't know what happened. I was covering the entrance like you told me. We had Tower Tom's Little maggots on the run, then "Blam"! I remember a face full of plaster then nothing. When I woke up I was here in Beantown Brewery with Tower Tom's ugly mug grinning at me. They've been good to me so far, but I only Think it's because they want our food.
Don't give them a thing, sis. I'll find a way out of here.

I hope you made it back to Astlin in time. There was nothing you could do for me. Get to the bunker up north. You'll survive. That's all that... all that matters...

The destination was Finch Farm.

Sometimes they flap so bad when I walk, it sounds like someone's clapping at me," Daniel said. "Well maybe they're just showin' their appreciation for all the hard work you do." "That's very funny, but I'm being serious here. I might as well go barefoot for all the trouble these things cause me." "Well, I'll see what we've got. It ain't much, but it might be enough," she said. "That's all I need to hear," he said.
"Mister Finch," Norma said. "Hey, you! Oh sorry, thought you might be one of those Forged maniacs, but you don't have the burns. A group of them took over the old ironworks, and they'll shoot yas as soon as look at ya," he said. "Who are the Forged?" "Bunch of trumped up raiders. Obsessesd with fire and metal. That bastard son of mine, Jake, snuck out in the middle of the night to join them. He grabbed my granddad's old sword. It's the closest thing I've got to an heirloom. If you really are with the Minutemen and you want to help, well, it would mean a lot to me if you could get that sword back." "What about your son, Jake? You don't care what happens to him?" Norma said. "I didn't raise my boys to be raiders. As far as I'm concerned, he's dead to me." "You want me to take a knife FROM a gunfight? Oh this is a whole new level of stupid. Even for me." "You're doing me a big favor and I'll make it up to you as best as I can," Abraham Finch said.
He turned to his wife...
"Where'd you put those fusion cells I set out the other day?" he said. "I put them back in your junk pile, dear. You know the rule. Anything that ain't on the workbench is fair game when I'm cleaning," Abigail said. "Well couldn't you have asked me first, woman? I had to dig around in that pile for two hours straight to find those damn things!" "Really? If I had to stop and ask about every piece of scrap you eft laying around, I'd need a week to tidy up the house! That's why I made that rule in the first plae. And I might remind you, Abraham Lowell Finch, that you agreed to it!" she said. "Alright, alright! I get the point, woman," he said. "Hmph. I'll believe it when I see it."
Norma's party made a berth of the Saugus Ironworks and went to the Slog where they stayed the night...

Barb's period was late -- she was definitely pregnant.

Morning came, and Norma's team made a surprise atack on Saugus Ironworks. They quickly met heavy resistance...
There was a big explosion when a car went up in smoke after its nuclear reactor had been hit...
Norma's team had not expected it, but now they had help from the ghouls living at the Slog...
Piper got caught in the open by one of the Forged. Fortunately her injury was not serious.

See Jake, here's someone who might actually be worth my time. Unlike you," he said. "But- but I brought everything you asked for," the young man said. "Stealing things from your family farm doesn't prove your strength boy. Though this wonderful sword you brought does put me in the mood to give you one last chance to prove your worth. Kill that prisoner and prove you aren't completely useless." "You said we'd be raiding outside of the Commonwealth. These people aren't even a threat to us!" "Prove to me that you can kill. It's him or you," Slag said. "Oh god, what do I do, what do I do?"
"Wait wait! I'm sorry, I messed up! I panicked!" Jake said. "What were you doing with those guys anyway?" Norma wondered. "Yeah... well... I just... I thought we' be raiding outside of the Commonwealth and that if I joined them I could provide for my family... I don't know. God, my dad's right. I'm such an idiot. Look, I should probably try to go home and make amends. I know I've got no right to ask... But I think if you're there to help explain, things with my Dad would go easier. I bet if you bring my Great Granddad's sword, he'll make it worth your while. He always tries to deal fair with people. I'll wait for you by the overpass near the farm," he said.

I thought if I joined up I could keep them from raiding our farm. I didn't- I don't want to hurt anybody," Jake said. "I don't care what you thought. I have watched you two go at it for years and tried to let you sort it out for yourselves. We just want to make sure you are prepared. There. It's over. And I if hear another word about it from either of you, so help me..." she said. "She's right. I've been a fool. There's no way I can thank you enough. Here's the caps we agreed on, plus a bit for helping my boy. I think you should hang on to that sword. It'd put a smile on Graddad's face to know it was being used to help people," Abraham said.

Barb and Norma were both pregnant. But, alas it would not last. The biggest storm they ever knew rolled in from the Glowing Sea. The radiation killed all babies and every pregnant woman miscarried.
Norma and Barb went hunting for the next radar beacon with Ada...

That's a very specific part to be searching for and you don't look like the typical scavenger type to me. I calculate a 98.8 percent chance that you're looking for the Mechanist. If I'm correct, and I usually am, then perhaps we can help each other with our respective... predicaments." "I'm listening." "How refreshing. Then allow me to explain. Now, how can I put this as simple as possible so someone at your processing speed can understand? In order to find the Mechanist, you're going to need more than just my radar beacon, you're going to need access to the facility. I'm willing to provide said access... but you'll have to fulfill two simple condition. One, you need to get me as far away as you can from these lunatics. And two, find me a new body. Once both conditions are satisfied, I'll gladly provide you with everything you need. Do we have a deal?" Jezebel said. "How do I know you'll keep up your end of the baragain?" "Even though there's a human brain floating in bio-gel inside my head, I'm still bound by my original programming. It pains me to admit, but one of my directives states that I cannot lie. Ever. Vased on my limited experience with you, I estimate a 65 percent chance of making it out of here. Not optimal. An increase in effort could have an impact on the odds," Jezebel said.

I'm not sure why you want the head back. All we needed was the rdar beacon. Besides, Robobrains are notorious for being... well, a real pain in the neck," the robot said. "What else do you know about them,Ada?" "Quite simply, it's the first time General Atomics produced a successful union between organic matter and robotics. The brain is used both as a control unit and a data storage unit which is far more efficient than using standard circuits. Unfortunately, there were a lot of programming issues with thee robots which caused them to be a bit... shall we say, unhinged? Hopefully, this particular Robobrain will have some of the answers we've been seeking." "A union of organic matter and robotics? Sounds an awful like a synth," Norma said. "Not at all. The Robobrain was built with a very different design philosophy in mind. General Atomics intent was to use the human brain to augment the robot's functions... primarily, to accelerate the decision-making process. Free-though and individuality were never intended. These were expressly built like soldiers... to follow orders without qustion. The Robobrain's unfortunate tendence towards violence and aggression should be considered more of a malfunction than a calculated decision." "We still need it, Ada. It makes perfect sense that the Mechanist would not only keep its location a closely guarded secret, but would secure it against intrusion as well. Perhaps if I had selected an alternate route, they'd still be alive. Sometimes I wish that Jackson had programmed me with my personality mode set permanently to disabled so I wouldn't feel so upset." "Your personality defines you as an individual. Never let that go," Norma said. "You're right. All of the good memories I've experience being Ada would be lost if my personality mode was shut down. The specific instruction is to help people. I merely interpreted the most efficient way to perform my duties. Assisting a human to the best of my abilitie pnly affords a 25 percent survival rate. That means a 75 percent chance that despite my efforts, the human I'm assisting will die from something beyomd my control. Therefore it's better to hasten the human's death and put them out of their likely chance of misery than to deplete my limited time. It's actually quite elementary, but given your minimal intellect, I suppose I shouldn't be surprsed you don't understand." These robots are too much a threat. Were you able to discover how to gain access to the Mechanist?" "I need to outfit a robot with something called an M-SAT. Jezebel gave me the plans." "A custom modification that acts as a key to the Mechanist's facility. Very smart. In fact, chances are high the M-SAT may be required for multiple access points, like a robot identification card. As for my task, I was able to decrypt the signal with the final radar beacon. The source is coming from a RobCo Sales&Service Center. Most likely a front for a larger operation. But Norma's party soon met with resistance...

"I find myself intrigued by these doors. For a robot, it's like poetry in motion," Ada said. "Never ceases to impress me when I see one of those old robots still running," Barb said.

They knew they were getting nearer the Mechanist, but there was still no sight of this elusive individual. They did find a holotape, though, revealing disturbing truths...
"Anise Ciroletti, Chief Scientist. This is the third time I've had to request more security. As thorough as our assembly procedures may be, there's a human factor to be considered. These are criminal and unstable minds. It can't be a scientist's job to ensure each test subject is properly sedated. I was promised military assistance, but we need more. I won't allow my crew to be endangered. As fascinating as it may be to integrate the human mind with robotics, sometimes I wish I had never signed up to this project."

"Halt, miscreant! You may have infiltrated my sanctum and destroyed my robots, but your reign of terror ends here," the Mechanist said. "Wait, my reign of terror?" Norma said. "The Commonwealth has suffered more than its fair share of injustices because of you. Now you'll face the full might of the Mechanist! My righteous robots will end your tyranny once and for all!" "Mechanist, this needs to stop."
Norma failed to reason with the Mechanist and the bullets started to fly...
"Impressive. But I think you fail to grasp the reality of your situation. Look around you. This entire facility is at my command. For every robot you destroy, ten more will come. Struggle all you want. There is nothing you can do to stop me. Nothing!"
Then...
"Warning. Power generation capacity exceeded. Now drawing reserve power," the Mainframe said. "Sparks!" the Mechanist called out. The eyebot beeped in alarm. "I'll deal with you myself. Come, my robots! Destroy her!" the Mechanist commanded.
The Mainframe kept warning about the power usage, until all went black...

"Let us discuss this... amicably," the Mechanist said. "Who are you? Don't you think it's time you ditched that mask?" Norma said. "You're... you're right. I'm Isabel. Cruz. The Mechanist was just an easy way for me to help the Commonwealth. But all my technical knowledge, all of these resources, and I still failed. How does the Commonwealth have any hope against people like you?"
"You think I'm the enemy here? I may have busted up your robots, but they're just machines. And they're killing real people out there," Norma said. "They have taken innocent lived. My friends... they were simple traders. All dead at the hands of your robots," Ada said. "Only people that threaten the safety of the Commonwealth. They'd never harm an innocent person. The robots are programmed to protect. Their subroutines are clean: observe, evaluate, and react accordingly. The testing was thorough. I ran every scenario. All passed," the Mechanist said. "You messed up. I got the truth out of one of your Robobrains. They think they're saving people by killing them," Norma said. "No, I don't believe you. They can't alter their programming. They're programmedd to save people, not kill them," the Mechanist said. "Are you listening to me? They are saving people... by killing them," Norma said. "A deadly misinterpretation," Ada filled in. "I am listening, I'm just... processing. So many precautions and safeguards. And the data. They were always reporting hostiles killed and lives... saved. no, it's... the logic. It's there... I can see it now. I was hoping it was the Robobrains, an issue with their memory wipes... but you're right. Their primary directive was flawed," the Mechanist said. "The Robobrains need memory wipes?" "Yes. The human brain has a way of... re-wiring itself. If not properly maintained, it can... corrupt." "That sounds like a serious flaw. And a dangerous one at that," Norma said. "It is. But the process is thorough. They're wiped after each mission. They're... I found it best to not let them recall what they've been through." "Well, your techicality cost a lot of innocent people their lives." "Judging from the numbers in the data dump, if even a small percentage are innocents... I wanted to help the Commonwealth... and robots are all I know. I found this place, and figured I could finally do my part. I accept full responsibility. I can't take back what I've done or even atone for it. But this doesn't have to end in violence," the Mechanist said. "Tell me. Why the mask? What's with the Mechanist?" "I'm... not good with people. The Mechanist gave me a way to put myself out there without really being out there at all. But... you're kind of keeping me in suspense here. I can turn this around. I just need a chance." "Your plan backfired. If you're telling the truth, this was one costly accident," Norma said. "It's the truth. I only ever wanted to make the Commonwealth a safer place. I grew up on a settlement. I've seen how good people struggle against Raiders and Super Mutants. I'd never want to be counted among them. Here. Take this. It's the password to the mainframe. You can use it to shut down the security protocols. I just... I rather this place be in your hands now," the Mechanist said.

If she lives, she does so with the guilt of what she's done." "I got her to see the truth." "So the Mechanist really was misguided," Ada said. "she truly wanted to help people. She didn't know what the Robobrains were doing. To her, a life saved was a life saved." "A biological wildcard. The unknowns are vast. She had to know the risk she was taking by creating tem. Many good people endure suffering and death because if the Mechanist. It's a shame a mind as brilliant as hers allowed such... atrocities to be committed." "She's good a heart. She made a mistake... a big one, and she'll live with that guilt," Norma said. "I believe I have a certain understanding when it comes to guilt. While it's not the justice I had hoped for, it will suffice. Still, I now know the death of my friends has brought about a safet Commonwealth. Had the Mechanist's robots remained unchecked, I'm certain the damage would have been extensive... Halting, if not reversing, any progress that has been made here. With this knowledge, I am finally registering feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment... and I have you to thank for it," Ada said.
