Baldur's Gate 3: Story of Tiff

This is my Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough as Tiff the Tiefling bard. As with all other stories, click the images to enlarge. An eldritch blast strikes one of the goblins...

"Damnable roach. Provoke the blade... and suffer its sting," Wyll said.

That was the last of them. Inside - all of you. More may follow. Open the gate!" Zevlor said. 

"There are children here, you fool!" Zevlor said. "We was running for our lives," Aradin said. "You led them straight to us. And you let them take the druid, too. Uunbelievable!" "Druid? Those goblins didn't take any prisoners," Tiff said. "We lost him back at the ruins - whole place is crawling with gobbos," Aradin said. "He trusted you," Zevlor said. "Nobody forced him to go with us - he insisted. And when things got tough, he couldn't keep up. Simple as that." "My gods, you're a coward," Zevlor said.

The human's eye twitches. He's about to blow.

"Arguing won't bring back the ones you lost," Tiff said. "You're right. There's too much at stake," Zevlor said. "Worried about your precious hides, the both of you," Aradin said. "Enough. Squabbling is pointless. The goblins have found us," Zevlor said. "At least we agree on that," Aradin said. 

"Forgive that display. Aradin's a blowhard, but that's no cause for me to join him. Thank you for your help out there. I'm Zevlor," the tiefling said. "I take my thanks in coin," Tiff said. "Then you'll have better luck looting the goblins outside - this is a druids' grove. Whatever your business, I'd see to it quickly - the druids are forcing everyone one out. This attack will only strengthen their resolve." "Those golbins - have there been many attacks like that?" There have been several attacks by different monsters. The druids blame us 'outsiders' for drawing them here. Nobody's welcome anymore. They've started a ritual to cut the grove off from the world outside. We can't stay, but we'll be slaughtered if we leave - we're no fighters," Zevlor said. "What brought you here?" "We're refugees from Elturel - we took shelter here after gnolls attacked us on the road. We were bound for Baldur's Gate, and it was too late to turn back. Elturel had no place for tieflings after the Descent."

"Is there a place for tieflings anywhere?" Tiff said. "Hah - fair point. We can only hope the citizens of Baldur's Gate are more open-minded. But we can't get there with those beasts blocking our path," Zevlor said. "This ritual - is there no way to convince the druids to stop it?" "I've tried. Kagha - their new First Druid - won't even see me. You, though... I know it's not your business, but she owes you for saving this place. Perhaps you could persuade her. For more time to prepare, if nothing else." "I have my own temporal concerns. I need a healer," Tiff said. "Goblin got you? The druid Halsin's a renowned healer, but he didn't make it back from Aradin's expedition. If it's not too serious, you could try his apprentice, Nettie. She's with the other druids, in the inner grove. They've withdrawn there to prepare this damn ritual of theirs."

Tiff contemplated options for a moment before leading the way deeper into the grove...

"Refugees, adventurers - no one in years and suddenly we're overwhelmed. Well met, and thank you for beating back those goblins. Most brave of you. Is there anything you need? Act fast if you do - the ritual will be complete before long," Arron said. "Are you really locking down the grove?" Tiff said. "I know it's drastic. but more monsters seem to terrorise this region every day." "What about the people here?" "We druids will be safe. As for those that took refuge here... well, may Silvanus guard them as they continue their travels," Arron said. "You kust said the region's overrun by monsters. They won't survive by themselves." "As I said, it's a drastic measure. But the survival of the grove is paramount. There just aren't enough supplies to support everyone." "What are you selling?" Tiff said. "Just some bits and bobs I no longer need."

"You. Saw you fighting those slimy bastards. Fancy a bowl? Best to fill your belly now - while we still can," Okta said. "What is it, exactly?" Tiff said. "Food. You want it or not?"

Tiff accepted the bowl.

"Look. It ain't much, but it might mke all the difference. The only way we'll make it to Baldur's Gate is if we run, and run hard. If a gnoll catches your scent, you'll need every bit of strength. Trust me," she said. 

"Thanks for fithing off those goblins. If you need to replace any gear, just ask. My selection is pretty slim. I had to leave most of my equipment in Elturel," Dammon said. "That forge is holding on by a thread. Are you a smith?" Tiff said. "Of sorts. Used to be a bread-and-butter tinsmith before Elturel fell into Avernus. These days my talents are more... eclectic. Learned a lot in my time in the Hells.Hope to forget most of it, but between you and me, there's nothing in all the realms like the utter power of infernal machinery. Alas - my offerings are far more humble these days."

"Ya ain't gonna shoot me. Yer hands are shakin'" Sazza said. "Put it down. She can't fight back," Memnos said.

He placed himself between the prisoner and the armed tiefling.

"That's the point. Get out of the way," Arka said. "She didn't kill your brother, Arka. You're better than this," Memnos said.

"Shoot before you lose your nerve, tiefling. If you ever had it to begin with," Sazza said. "Shut up. Those words could be your last," Tiff said. "I'm not afraid. Chosen by the Absolute, I am. I'm blessed," Sazza said. "Oh, I'll bless you all right. Here it comes, you little beast."

Arka pulled the trigger and the goblin prisoner was no more. 

"B-by Mordai's eyes, another one. My f'friend's blood not enough? Come to rip me open, too?" Zorru said. "In Creche K'liir, a formal greeting begins with a bow," Lae'zel said. "Is this m-monster with you?" "You heard the woman. Bow," Tiff said.

"Lower," the githyanki woman said. "That's enough, Lae'zel. I'll take it from here," Tiff said. "You dare interrupt? Has the tadpole ravaged your senses?" "Enough, Lae'zel. You will be silent. You - tell me where you saw the githyanki." "On the road to Baldur's Gate, near the mountain p-pass. S.saw us 'fore we saw it. Jammed its blade through Yul's belly, straight through to the other side. And I just... I just ran," Zorru said. "The map. Show me," Lae'zel said."

"All right, Lae'zel. You got what you needed," Tiff said. "Yes. Your mediocre interrogation technoque notwithstanding. Up. You can keep your innards," she said.

"The last time a subordinate questioned my judgement, I ate tongie stew that very night," Lae'zel said. "I warned you, didn't I? You ought to reconsider keeping her around, before she causes real trouble," Shadowheart said. "Subordinate? No - we're partners. You'll treat me with respect," Tiff said. "Kainyank. Your tantrum proves you no wiser than a hatchling. The teeth-ling was clear. If there are githyanki west of here, that must be our objective. Purification cannot wait," Lae'zel said. "We are 'tieflings', with an 'f'." "I am unfamiliar with the - well, I shall not say 'culture'. 'Custom', perhaps. You will educate me on matters of this Fay-run." "No, no. It's Faerûn," Tiff said. "Tch." "What do you mean, 'purification'?" "The creche holds the zaith'isk. It will cleanse us of the parasite. By covenant, I can say no more," Lae'zel said. 

"Git over there. Surround 'em, like... Oi! You just walked into the wrong town. Don't bother runnin'. My archers got decent aim and plenty of arrows," the goblin said.

The mark glows, but Tiff feels nothing in response. His illithid power is beyond reach until he rests.

"I'm not running, and their aim's not good enough to save you," Tiff said. "Hold up, lads! This one might be more'n we bargained for. Go on, then. Just keep your nose clean," the goblin said.

"You know what I really miss about Baldur's Gate? The food. Freshest fish I've ever had," Shadowheart said. "I don't really care for fish. Red meat - now that's a different matter. Rare as can be... dripping," Astarion said. "Well unless we find a cure you won't have teeth to chew it with soon enough," she said. 

"Chk - be wary of false promises. The missing druid - Halsin, was it? He may be talented, but only a githyanki xaith'isk can cleanse an embedded tadpole," Lae'zel said. "Are you sure a creche is our only path to a cure," Tiff said. "Entirely. I was as devoted to my studies as I was to my training. Each creche contains a zaith'isk purification device. So I learned from the writings in the K'liir library. The library was a gift from Vlaakith herself, that we may gain total understanding." "That kind of wisdom is very valuable." "Countless scholars roam the Astral Sea and beyond - observing the ways of our lessers, exploring planes so distant, ordr turns to chaos and cold fires rage. The planes are ever quaking, and their peoples ever shifting. The githyanki possess an eternity of knowledge... yet we still collect more. Infinities upon infinities," she said. 

The party continued exploring the village...

"Look what we got here - another little birdie wantin' to fly!" Fezzerk said. "Stop this thiiiing"" Barcus Wroot said. "Yeheheuh! Flap those wings some more, an' I'll feed you a worm! An' you - hope you got a stomach for heights!" Fezzerk said. "What the hells are you doing?" Tiff said. "What's it bloody look like? We're teaching this 'ere pipsqueak to fly!" "Let me rephrase that - why are you doing this?" "'Cause it makes me laugh! Heh!" the goblin said. "Fun's over - release the gnome at once." "You want this little cave-lurkin' wotsit? Find your own! He's ours!"

The mark glows, but Tiff feels nothing in response. His illithid power is beyond reach until he rests. Tiff reads the goblin's mind...

"You don't have the stomach for a fight," the tiefling said. 

The goblin's nostrils flare, as if trying to judge Tiff through smell alone...

"All right, fine! Take the little blood clot. Good riddance to the lot o' ye!" Fezzerk said.

Shadowheat's attention is fixed on a damaged old statue.

"We... we should keep moving," she said. "What just happened?" Tiff said. "Nothing. A trick of the light." "Trick of the light? Don't take me for a fool." "I'll take you as I find you. Now let the matter rest. Let's just move along. Time's a rare currency for both of us," she said.

"Cut me loose!" Barcus Wroot said. "What's in it for me?" Tiff said. "Free me and find out," the gnome said.

The party cut him loose...

"Urrrrgh... magga cammara - those pustulent thugs! Well - get on with it," Barcus said. "I freed you. A little compensation would be nice," Tiff said. "As expected. Coercion by the book. Take my pack if you can find it. The only reason those goblins caught me was the weight of it. I'll travel lightly from now on." "You're a little far from home for a deep gnome." "Ignorance is alive and well, it seems! Deep gnomes aren't restricted to the Underdark, you know. I've lived in Baldur's Gate for years. I'm in search of a friend. I fear he's in trouble. See this? I gave it to him years ago before I left home," Barcus said.

"I found it around the neck of a thug in the Lower City. It was speckled with blood, my friend nowhere to be found. But I still have hope. I have reason to believe he's in the Underdark. Hopefully I'll pick up his trail from there. I always help my friends. On that note, I bid thee farewell. If we should meet again... well, we will have met again," he continued.

"I know that look -you're wondering why I was in pain before. Let's just clear the air about that now. It's just an old wound that hurts me from time to time. Nothing to be concerned about. It's nothing to do with the tadpoles, in case your imagination is in danger of getting away from you. It's just... something I have to live with," Shadowheart said. "How badly does it hurt?" Tiff said. "Quite a lot, if I'm being honest. But it always passes quickly, so I can manage." "Are you sure it's not connected to the tadpoles?" "Positive. You can trust me on that," she said. "What's the story with that odd little artefact you have?" "There's no story. None that you're entitled to hear, anyway. Just forget you ever saw it." "There's something you're not telling me - I'm sure of it," he said. "I don't know what you mean." "That ruined Selûne statue - it made you hesitate." "It's nothing. Really," Shadowheart said. "We have to be honest with each other. What is it you're keeping from me?" "You're not going to let this go, are you? You might wish you had... I worship Shar, the Mistress of the Night. It is my mission to oppose Selûne, her teachings and her followers. Ngh... it hurts... Now that you have the truth, please don't make a big fuss about it." "You could have told me. How long were you going to keep this secret?" Tiff said. "Forever, ideally. And you assume too much about what I can and cannot tell. Secrecy is everything for Shar's children. It's our code, our creed, our shield. I even keep secrets from myself - I had my memories suppressed, so that nothing I knew could be used against the Dark Lady. Once I prove mysel, my memories will be restored. I'm not sorry I kept this from you. Not one bit. Though perhaps that might change, if you can show an open mind." "Let's see how open-minded I can be then: tell me more." "All right. As I said, Shar is my patron, my mistress. Goddess of darkness and loss. I assume you've heard of her?" she said. "I've heard Shar worship is vilified by many - forbidden outright in parts." "Well if that troubles you, perhaps you should fetch the bailiff to arrest me... Ah, but there's no bailiff here, is there? Just leagues of wilderness and the dangers lurking within. We're in this together, but I'll happily go it alone. My faith will keep me company." "Why were you in pain before?" he said. "The wound on my hand. It never quite heals, and sometimes it causes terrible pain to rip through me. It's my burden though, from Lady Shar. I can feel her influence somehow..." "Why would Shar subject you to such a thing?" "I cannot say - not with what I can recall. But even then, it would not be for me to question her will. Lady Shar has her reason," Shadowheart said. "Is there anything I can do to hep with it?" "I don't think so, but you're sweet to ask. Maybe just be patient next time you see me wince or cry out - it will pass quickly enough. It always does. Pain is sacred to followers of Shar. Pain will give way to loss, and then to the peace of her eternal darkness. You can tolerate a great deal of suffering, so long as it has meaning."

A drunk bugbear was sleeping it off. Putting an end to this creature was mere child's play. 

The beast reeks of brimstone and offal. Every breath is thick with blood. Tiff hears what comes next before he sees it: the sharp snapping of bones and a yelp of pain as her body starts to twist and undulate. Tiff watche with cold realisation - this isn't the end of one life, but the start of another. Gnolls - viscious, monstous humanoids - can spawn from the corpses of dying hyenas. Tiff strikes while the beast is vulnerable. He lands a swift strike against her skull. She yelps, then goes still. As the life fades from her eyes, the gnoll inside her dies too, stillborn.

The party quickly kills the rest of the dying hyeanas before more gnolls can be born. One hyena attempts to run off to call for reinforcements, but before it is able the creature is shot and killed...

Tiff's party takes the nearby gnolls with surprise and fell one before they even know what hit them. The battle is soon over and the beasts are dead.

Tiff reaches out to the dog to pet him. The tiefling peers at the dog's collar. He sees a name etched into the leather - Scratch. Tiff kneels - he means no harm. The dog lowers his hackles, his head tilted inquisively. Convinced that the tiefling bard is harmless, he turns his attention back to the corpse.

"You're all right, Scratch," Tiff said.

With a deep, heartbroken whine, the dog bows his head.

"Come on, Scratch. Follow me," Tiff said.

The dog looks at his owner with sad eyes. He doesn't move. Tiff pets him. The dog whimpers nervously, as if to urge the tiefling on. Tiff holds out his hand so the dog can follow his scent back to camp. The dog sniffs the bard's hand, his tail swung low in understanding. He knows where to find him. 

"Ngh..." "Are you all right?" Tiff said. "Me? Never better... Well, fudge me. It's you. From the nautiloid. Please tell me I found you before those so-called paladins of Tyr did," Karlach said. 

"First, I'd like to know more how you controlled those flames," Tiff said. "Nice of you to ask. Lately I've gotten used to being called 'devil'. No follow-up questions. The truth is... well, it's a long story. And I'll tell it, but -

A great heat roars through Tiff - her heat, fiery as the Hells. Then he's lost in visions of demonic armies as he tears through a landscape of fire and blood. The Blood War. Tiff saw it from above as the nautiloid passed through Avernus - this woman was on the front line.

"What the hell was that?!" she said.

"It's the tadpole in our heads. It connects us," Tiff said. "fudge's sake. Mountains as far as the eye can see. Guess that explains the voices. From that peek I got into your head, you've made some inroads trying to get the thing sorted. But alas, no joy. I'm Karlach. And you are...?" "I'm Tiff." "Well met, soldier. Now that we're old pals, how would you feel about helping me kill some evil bastards? A little background, if your moral compass needs something to point at... You already know I fought in the Blood War. I was good at killing demons. Really good. So good Zariel, the archdevil herself, made me her personal attack dog. I played along until I could get the fudge out of there. Took me ten years to properly escape, but now I'm free. Zariel's sent goons to hunt me down, but believe me when  tell you I'm not going. The latest yappy little dogs she's sicced on me are nearby. A group of doped posing as Paladins of Tyr. Want to help me take 'em down?" she said. "So you want me to kill the people hunting you?" "Don't worry, I'll lead the charge. But I could use your help. There's a lot of them and only one of me. After that, we can team up. Take Faerûn by the short hairs. Sound good?" "I like her. She looks like she could throw me over her shoulder and carry me to safety, should the need arise," Shadowheart said. "Let's do it," Tiff said. "fudge yes. They conered me outside the tollhouse, just up the hill. Doubt they've gone far after the scorching I gave 'em. Hang on, though - looks like you've got enough backup at your side. Not sure there's room for me. I'll catch up with you when it's time to camp, for now. But don't get to any of the fun stuff without me - got it?" Karlach said. "Karlach's got the brawn of a warrior and the viles of a survivor. But best of all, she speaks her mind, plainly and fully. Show her due respect," Lae'zel said. 

Apart from an overgrowth of moss, the well looks unremarkable. Lae'zel peers into the well. Dry stones line the wall. At the bottom, something gleams in the dappled light. The party climb down the bucket rope...

Tiff decides the party will explore this area at a later time. Right now the team is not up to whatever dangers may lurk in these depths, in his opinion.

"I know we're a strange band, but a fugitive from the Hells? Now that's someone worth knowing. Not that I want to getr on the wrong side of any devils, but this Karlach is a survivor. Plus, I appreciate anyone who opens a converstation with threats of bodily harm," Astarion said. 

While exploring the Emerald Grove the party surprised a bugbear assassin trying to strike against the tiefling lookout...

"You have good timing. Never been much of a fighter, so wrestling a bugbear would have gone poorly. But you're not here for heroics, are you? Avernus' stench is all over your skin. Let me guess: your devil mistress sent you to get her soul coin back. Too bad. I earned it fair and square," Nadira said. "That bugbear would have crushed your skull. This is the thanks I get?" Karlach said. "Why thank you, dread slayer of bugbears. You shall live forever in my memory. Now take my regards back to that pouting erinyes and leave me alone." "The coin, now. Or you can be alone in your grave." "Considering you turned that bugbear into paste... that's a fair trade. Here. Take this soul back to the damned place it came from," Nadira said.

A soul coin, true to its name, holds a mortal soul inside. It serves in the Nine Hells as very valuable currency.

"Step, parry, strike - damn it! It's just not landing," Guex said. "Hving trouble?" Tiff said. "Nothing but. Goblins in the wilds, out for blood. And the druids in here, looking to kick us out - or worse. We need to be ready for a fight - but I'm useless with a sword.

Tiff decides to demonstrate a swing - show him the fluidity of movement he lacks.

"Like this, you mean? Step-step, strike! Yes! You really know what you're doing! Found this by the road - bet you'll put it to good use," Guex said. "One last thing - don't shout out your moves like that. Spoils the surprise for your foe," Tiff said. "Oh... yes. I'll bite my tongue when the time comes." "Keep training. In time, you'll make short wotk of any goblins." "Hopefully it's just the goblins we have to worry about - the druids are treating us like vermin. But I'll keep at it. Thank you," Guex said. 

"Let my daughter go - right now," Komira said. "She's a thief, hellspawn. And you will wait for Kagha's judgement. Now get back," Jeorna said. "Argh. Let me through, mragreshem, or I'll rip your damned throat out!"

"We need to get Arabella out. Now," Komira said. "You heard the guards - they're waiting for Kagha to give word," Locke said. "I' sooner trek through the Nine Hells than trust that snake. Argh."

"I saw what happened. Why are the druids holding your daughter?" Tiff said. "Arabella tried to steal their idol. Druids lost their damn minds about it - they need it for their precious ritual," Locke said. "It's all my fault. I told her I wished the wretched thing would just disappear -or better yet, explode," Komira said. "Now Arabella is being judged by a bunch of druids who hate us. That's not right," Locke said. "Breaking into druid chambers to steal a sacred relic? Oh, she sounds like fun," Astarion said. "She's just a child - the druids are overreacting. I'll talk to them," Tiff said. "Thank you. They won't give us the time of day," Locke said. "Hurry. I'm at the end of my tether as is - can't take this waiting," Komira said. 

"You - step back. Go join the other tieflings," Jeorna said. "If it weren't for me, you'd be overrun by goblins by now. I'll go where I please," Tiff said. "Keep back. Force my hand, and I'll show you its claws." "A moment, Jeorna," Mino said. "What...? Oh. I understnd. You - apparently Kagha wants to see you. Go ahead," Jeorna said. 

"Ah, my good friend! You were at the gates just now, no? When the goblins came? You saw them up close? A few questions, if you please. There's no overstating my interest," Volo said. "Fine - ask your questions," Tiff said. "Glory! Now, then. How would you describe that particular batch of goblins? Size? Nature? Distinguishing qualities?"

Tiff searches his mind, successfully recalling various details of goblin behavior.

"Didn't you see the tentacled ship? It was an illithind invasion force - the goblins were being controlled!" Tiff said. "Ye gods! Can it be? How terribly... compelling... And the... dragon they had marching in the rear. Was it of brass or silver variety?" Volo said. "Dragons? Really? How gauche." "Witness... declined... to... comment... on... nature... of... dragon... Last question, then you'll be free. Did the attckers rally to the Absolute when they fell upon the gates?" "Quite so. They sang the phrase like a battle-hymn," Tiff said. "They did, didn't they? Oh-ho, curious. Curious indeed. I've interrogated one - a captive in this very camp. She reports they've abandoned their god Maglubiyet in favour of someone called -the Ablolute'. The scandal!" "Dramatic. How has Maglubiyet responded?" "Oh, I'd imagine him quite displeased. Since their change in allegiance, these goblins are informed by a kind of strategy anathema to their kind. I, for one, intend to get to the bottom of it. I'm just preparing to head to their camp as we speak. In fact... if you'll excuse me, I ought not to dawdle," Volo said. "Be careful. Goblins aren't known for mercy." "Never you mind. Who needs mercy when you've a quick tongue. And an invisibility potion stashed in your back pocket. Until we meet again!"

"Please. I'm sorry!" Arabella said. "This is madness, Kagha. She's just a..." "A what, Rath? A thief? A poison? A thrat? I will imprison the devil. And I will cast out the rest," Kagha said. 

"Out, thief. My grace has its limits," Kagha said. "Ngh... it hurts..." Shadowheart said. "Thank you, Kagha. Master Halson would..." Rath said. "Halsin isn't here. Keep his name off your tongue, lest Teela pierce it," Kagha said.

"Go on. Say it. You think I'm a monster," Kagha said. "Only a monster would threaten a child," Tiff said. "Yes - you would say so. I know your kind. You see only villains and victims. A viper bares her fangs defending her brood. I call her mother. You call her monster. No matter. I took back the Idol of Silvanus and the rite has resumed. We will seal the grove. Free from harm. Free of intruders." "Zevlors believes his people will perish on the road." "And mine perish if he stays. You showed great mettle at the gate - the mettle of a skilled sword for hire. I want you to provide your services to Zevlor. Offer to guide the outlanders out of the grove. I'm sure they will reward you well. They're to be gone before filan prayer. If they are not... the viper must strike..." she said. "Then it seems I'd best speak to Zevlor." "Tou will do more than speak. This tale ends but one way: with the outlander rot cleansed and the grove forever shrouded."

"You ever scare me like that again, and I'll feed you to a gnoll," Komira said. "Mum. I'm fine. stop it," Arabella said. "Our little hellion told us what happened. Thank you - don't know what we'd do without her," Locke said. "No more light-fingered antics - right, Arabella?" Tiff said. "Yeah. I mean. Thank you. For helping me," she said. 

"Ah, if it isn't the talk o' the camp? Thank goodness you came along when you - oh! There isn't a bit of colour in those cheeks, petal! Are you hurt? Cold? Feverish? Auntie Ethel will sort you out. I've got lotions and potions galore!" she said. "What are you, an alchemist?" Tiff said. "Oh, nothing as fancy as that! But I come from a long line of women with a dab hand at such things. Aha! You take a sup of that and you'll feel right as rain, sweetie." "And what is this, exactly?" "Oh, 'tis just a healing potion. Nothing fancy! Here. You look like you might need a pick-me-up. I'm sorry to go on about it, but are you all right? You're looking awful peaky," Auntie Ethel said. "I've been better. It's... difficult to explain." "Oh, I've seen it all! I once had a fella who'd been caught dabbling with a dryad. The wife was none too pleased and introduced him to a pot of boiling oil. But worry not! I fixed him up and, depending on the lighting, he looks good as new! My point is - whatever ails you... I promise I've seen worse." "Something doesn't add up about her. Don't tell her anything," Shadowheart said. "What is it, petal? What's wrong?" Auntie Ethel said. "I've got a mind flayer parasite in my head," Tiff said. 

As he recounts his adventure, Auntie Ethel nods along - her eyes wide.

"Hey, we're still going after those paladins, right? Can't leave Zariel's bruisers roaming the coast," Karlach said. "Right - don't worry, we'll go after them," Tiff said. "Good news. Can't wait to see 'em finished."

They entered the building. Three people were inside...

"Please - no more! Leave us in peace, and we shall leave you in kind." "Cut the crap, Ander. I know what you are," Karlach said. "Don't let her hurt us - please, we just want to go home," he said.

Tiff uses his insight to assess the man's posture, his eyee - is he telling the truth? There's something in the squint of Anders' eye. Tiff suspects he's lying.

"Enough of this charade. I know who you really are," he said. "Enough - enough. I'll not play pretend anymore. Karlach, you're going home in pieces if needs must. And you - you'll soon learn what it means to ally with the likes of this garbage," Anders said. "Avernus was never my home. It was my prison. I'm fre now. AND I'M NEVER GOING BACK," Karlach said.

The enemy put up a good fight but were defeated.

"fudge them. fudge Zariel. I won't go back. I'm never going back. And if any of mummy's little friends want to pick up where the others left off - they'll find nothing but a pile of ash," Karlach said. "Zariel won't get near you. We'll make sure of that," Tiff said. "That's right, she won't. She can't. She couldn't even lay a finger. AHAHAHAHAHA!"

Karlach flares up in flames and runs around the tollhouse setting everything ablaze...

"Phew. Had to let off a little steam after facing off with those ignots. Granted the fire's lasting a little longer than it should. How do I look?" Karlach said. "Like you should've melted a long time ago. How can you stand it?" Tiff said. "Honey, I could go all night. Hear that? Infernal engine for a heart. Let's me burn hot as the Hells. Seems to be running in overdrive since I left Avernus. Won't be seeing my mechanic soon, so I'll just make the most of the extra heat. Just don't get too close 'til I've found a way to calm it down." "How the hells did you get an infernal engine for a heart?" "High pain tolerance. And a dynamic duo of shitty bosses. But it's a bit early in the game to be getting into tragic backstories. Let's save the scar-show for later, after we've worked up an appetite for tragedy. Meanwhile, I'll need to find someone who can tune up my engine sooner rather than later. elieve me when I say this thing is hot. The first time I faced down those 'paladins', they let slip there was an infernal mechanic in the area. A tiefling. He might be able to stabilise things - if I can find him," Karlach said. "Wonder if they mean Dammon - a tiefling weaponsmith." "A weaponsmith, huh? Not sure if he's the guy, but I'd love to find out. A tune-up would do this rusty heart a world of good."

"Thought I sensed an infernal around here. But you aren't from Elturel. What's your story?" Dammon said. "I spent a good bit of time in the Hells. Enlisted against my will by the archdevil Zariel. Same as you, I suppose, if you're from Elturel. The devils were delighted when your city was swallowed up. I thought they had you for keeps. Glad you got out," Karlach said. "I got lucky. It looks like you did too. And... you brought some infernal machinery with you." "A little gift from Zariel. Keeps me burning hot." "Very hot, by the smell of it. Might be burning out a piston ring - or leaking oil. Mind if I take a listen?" Dammon said. "Be my guest. But don't get too close, or your eyes'll melt shut."

"Phew! You really are burning up. Whoever put that engine together tried to house metallurgised demono-valves inside a ra-grax alloy casement. Very risky. I might be able to help, but I'd need infernal iron. And a prayer that my hammer'll survive the work. That thing isn't meant to operate outside Avernus. I'm not sure how much longer it'll keep running, the way it's going," Dammon said. "Will you be able to turn down the temperature a little? Worried I'm gonna go in for a handshake and singe someone's arm off one of these days," Karlach said. "I'd worry about surviving the night first. But help one, help both: if we can cool you off, it'll stabilise your engine and allow you to touch whomever you please." "Where should we look for infernal iron?" Tiff said. "I've sensed some during our travels. It has a pull to it - absolutely magnetic, once you know what you're looking for. I can show you where I'd look," Dammon said. "We'll keep our eyes open for some iron." "Meanwhile, I've still got plenty of weapons and armour in stock if you're looking to load up."

"Hold out your hand, mister. Let me show you something. Go on. Take this ring. It's lucky," Mattis said. "That was a fancy trick," Tiff said. "You haven't seen anything yet, mister! Go on! Take the ring and watch your fortune change!"

Tiff mimics the boys's trick and makes the ring disappear.

"Weeping, bleeding hells. Okay, maybe you don't need extra luck. But since you're already holding the thing... Call it. Heads or tails?" Mattis said. "Heads," Tiff said. "Heads it is! See? That's the kind of luck you get from just one of my rings! I've got more where that came from. Real cheap too. Interested?" "No thanks. Could I see your wares?" "You got it. One sec," Mattis said.

Tiff suddenly feels something moving against his back and turns.

"Relax, I won't get angry. You didn't even manage to get anything from me," Tiff said. "I can't do this anymore, Mattis! I'm sorry!" Silfy cried. 

"Karlach's temper is a sight to behold. She'll need to be careful, or that rage will burn her right out," Shadowheart said.

"How fares the search?" Dammon said. "I found the infernal iron you mentioned," Tiff said. "Please let this work..." Karlach said. "Mm. The weight of it. And that blaze of chaos. Can't imagine this where my heart should be. Must be quite the experience. Give me just a moment... and I think..." Dammon said.

"There. You'll have to install it, I'm afraid. I don't think there are gloves thick enough in any of the realms to protect from that kind of heat," Dammon said. "That feels... good. I'm still burning hot as Hell's hole, but I feel less... changeable. Cheers, mate," Karlach said. "Pleasure. And for the heat, I haven't got any solutions now, but I'm not giving up. Could be if the combustion chamber had its own insulation, or if we had some kind of enchanted coolant... Find me in Baldur's Gate. If I'm worth my salt, I'll have figured something out by then. Take care, Karlach. And hopefully the next time I see you, I'll have something promising to report. Pocket any infernal iron you find along the way, hmm?" he said.

"Dammon's upgrade didn't cool me down, but it did juice me up. I don't think I've ever felt more powerful," Karlach said. "We'll find more infernal iron and get you that second upgrade, too," Tiff said. "Sooner rather than later would be good. I feel like I'm burning serious fuel." "Will you be all right?" "Oh fudge yes. I'm ready to burn all night. Speaking of, I could eat a giant badger. Is it almost time for dinner?" she said.

The bird's eyes are glassy, its breathing weak.

"I see you. Just give me a moment," Nettie said. "Is there anything I can do to help?" Tiff said. "Vis medicatrix... There. It's up to her now. Life or death. Now, what was it you needed?" "Healing. Looks like I came to the right person." "I do what I can. For most folks, that's enough. Come here. Let's have a look at you. You seem healthy enough. A bit tited 'round the eyes, maybe," she said. "More than tired. Something crawled into my eye." "Crawled in? Some sort of bug or - wait... Did it look like a tadpole? But from your worst nightmare? All slime, teeth, and tentacles?" "What other kinds are there? It's not like a frog hopped in my eye," he said. 

"That's... a serious condition. Come, follow me. I might be able to help," Nettie said.

"This one had the same problem as you. Attacked us in the woods together with some goblins. Tadpole crawled out of his head soon after," Nettie said. "Is everyone being captured by mind flayers these days? Didn't think it was a common experience," Tiff said. 

"Rather too common as of late. At least that's what Master Halsin suspected. A pity you got me instead of him. He understands these things - studied them. Still, we have options. All right, let's see what we can do," she said. "What's that plant? Will it help?" he said. " It might, but first things first. Tell me of your symptoms - have you noticed anything strange happening?" "I can merge my mind with anyone else that's infected." "Victims can identify each other? Not that the others know they're victims, of course. How'd you pick up the parasite? Halsin was desperate to find where all this was happening," Nettie said. "On a mind falyer ship - I was kidnapped and infected." "A mind flayer ship? But Master Halsin was sure - Look, you've been straight with me, so I'll be straight with you. You're dangerous. If you transform here, we're all dead. But you seem like a good soul. You deserve a chance to save yourself. This is a vial of wyvern poison. Swear to me you'll swallow it if you feel any symptoms." "I thought you would cure me? What about that branch of yours?" Tiff said. "The thorn? Coated in a fatal toxin. It was a last resort, in case I couldn't trust you. I don't have a cure. Only a way out. I'm sorry for misleading you, but I had to be sure you weren't a threat before I told you everythinmg. Now, do I have your word or not?" "I swear." "You know, I've spent my life treating folk and never once saw a mind flayer infection. Then suddenly there's dozens of you - maybe more. Master Halsin and I were tracking them, studying them, trying to figure out what the hells was going on. Because you should all be changing - there should be a small army of mind flayers out there. But you're not. Weird powers aside, you seem perfectly normal," she said. "What do you mean 'should' be changing?" "Mind flayers reproduce by infecting someone with their parasite. Seven gruesome days later, the victim transforms and a new mind flayer is born. The thing in your skull, though? It's different to anything in our records. It's one of their worms, for sure, but it gives you powers - telepathic connections. And it doesn't turn you into one of them. Not yet, anyhow." "So you think it's only a matter of time?" he said. "Could be, but there's a lot we don't know. Infected - folks like you - have been converging on an old temple of Selûne, andI've no idea why. When Master Halsin heard adventurers were heading that way, he saw a chance to get answers. Joined them on the spot. Whatever he found there, he didn't make it back." "You think he's still alive?" "I think so, I hope so. I've sent birds to find him, but they can't get close without goblins trying to shoot them down. You, though? You're one of them - technically speaking, I mean. They won't kil someone carrying the parasite. If you can find Halsin and get him out of there, we can discover what he learned. And perhaps we can save your life. How's that sound?" Nettie said. "All right, I'll find Halsin." "Than you. It would mean everything to the grove. To me. I wish I could tell you more, but only those adventurers know what happened out there."

"Shh! Listen," Mirkon said. "You shouldn't be standing out in the water. It's dangerous," Tiff said. "Don't you hear it? It's so peaceful."

Tiff focuses and tries to hear what the boy hears. A sweet melody beckons him. It vibrates with magic - a harpy's charm. Tiff focuses by singing: 

"There once was a lady who met with a merrow, and tried to discover her foolish fellow..."

The suffocating yearning suddenly fades as the spell breaks. Tiff the bard is free. He continues his performance:

"Her man would not listen, he thought it tall tales, until he rubbed up against all of her scales!" "Auch! My ears!" Wait - why am I wet?" Mirkon said. 

"No! He's ours," the harpy said.

"A-are they gone?" Mirkon said. "They're gone. Are you all right?" Tiff said. "No - yes - I mean... I don't know!" "Go back to your parents. There's worse in the wilds than harpies." "Th-they're gone. Now there's just Mol. She'll be so mad. I didn't get the gold from the nest. I got to go. Wait, umm... you should meet Mol. She'll be grateful you helped me. Find a boy called Doni. Tell him you want to see the'Dragon's Lair'," Mirkon said. 

"Dance upon the stars tonight. Smile and pain will fade away. Words of mine will change - no. Become - ugh," Alfira said. "What's that tune you're singing?" Karlach said. "More like butchering. Don't know why I bother." "Are you all right?" "No. I'm moments away from a grisly death... at the hands of this bloody song. I can't... nothing fits, you know?" Alfira said. 

"That's the creative process for you. Agony and ecstacy. Mostly agony," Karlach said. "True. And when you finally perfect a song... there's nothing like it... But when you're stuck, and it's getting worse - ugh," Alfira said. "Best of luck with that." "Thanks. I'll need it."

"Lookit, Klaw! Supper's here! Unless you got another reason to be here, feck-shite," Sentinel Olak said. 

The mark glows, but Tiff feels nothing in reponse. His illithid power is beyond reach until he rests.

"Glossy coat on that animal. Does it belong to the Nordiland worgata family?" Tiff said. "How'd you know? Dumb as a rock, but world class at tearin' the throats outta wee ones, she is. Rest of her litter's inside, in the pens. Beautiful beasts," Olak said. "She looks fierce. Is she battle-tested?" "'Course. Rippe out three bellies on our last raid alone. Be a shame if you came all this way without havin' a look. But I can't let you pass just like that. Celebratin' a raid, we are. You'll need to wear our war colours. Nice dab o' this across the mug oughta do it."

Of course the goblins at the gate weren't so friendly after that display. But Tiff's party dealt with them without any greater difficulty. 

"Hear my voice. Obey my command."

The voice is irrestistible. They recognise the overwhelming authority that Tiff used on others, only infinitely stronger, and turned against the party...

Their vision clouds, leaving the party in a dark, featureless shadowscape. Nothingness in every direction. Then, there are three figures before them. An armoured male elf, exuding power and command. A handsome younger man with a quick, easy smile. And a pale young woman with even paler eyes.

"These are my Chosen. They speak for me. Aid their seach for the Prism, and you will be worthy to stand beside them. In my presence," the disembodied voice said. 

They feel the energy pulsing from the artefact. Lifting the pain from them. Pushing the voice away.

"My power grows. My forces gather. The reckoning draws near."

"Don't give me that look. I don't know what just happened any more than you. We should keep going," Shadowheart said. "The voice is gone - muted by this... this gith relic. Why does a half-elf carry it?" Lae'zel said. "You've got some explaining to do first - what is that thing you have?" Tiff said. "I don't know... not exactly. All I know is it's important I get it back to Baldur's Gate. At any cost," Shadowheart said. "What's in Baldur's Gate?" "My home - a cloister of Shar followers, hidden in the city. A group of us were sent to retrieve the artefact. Now I'm the only one left. I can't afford to fail." "And exactly what did retrieving the artefact entail?" Tiff said. "There's nothing more I can tell you. All I remember is that I have to get back to my contact in the city." "I know those symbols - githyanki runes. Ancient as Vlaakith herself. You stole that from my people," Lae'zel said. "Yes, and a lot of my people died in the process. I won't fail them - not after what I saw your kind do to them," Shadowheart said. 

A powerful artefact indeed, to have caught the attention of so many. Not least, the Absolute itself. The thre figures in the vision - the Chosen - are searching for it. With the cultists' aid, it will not be long before they find it, before they find the party. They have evaded them so far. Thanks, it seems, to the artefact itself. But how long can such protection last? Shadowheart has made her position clear - she will see it taken to its destination. At any cost. No doubt the githyanki will seek to reclaim what is theirs. And Tiff still does not know what it is.

"Enough, both of you. We need to work together," he said. "For now. But any crimes against my kin will be answered for, in time," Lae'zel said. "I just saved you. Keep that in mind, next time to want to air your grievances," Shadowheart said. 

"With fragulous crown, and with sceptre abrade, Dror Ragzlin short work of the innkeeper made! The inn burned to ash! The captives were many! Goblinkind had recuced them to cowering filfenney! So raiseth your goblets, and drain them with pride! Dror Ragzlin, the True Soul, hath led you galide!" Volo said. "For a soul's not been truer than the Ragzlin named Dror..." Tiff said. "Huh. That was good, carry on, pigeon," Gribbo said. "Um... Hah... And if you saw him kill manlings, you'd have to yell... ahem... proooaaaaar!" Volo said. "I heard Ragzlin casts shadows that are 20 leagues wide!" Tiff said. "Um... Why... Err... He's a meatier creature than any I've spied! Oh, balderdash..." Volo said. 

"Oi, stranger, you meddlin' with my pigeon? He's talking stupid now," Gribbo said. 

"Ahem. Dror Ragzlin, Dror Ragzlin, we, erm... I, erm... Dror Ragzlin, umtumptous, Dror Ragzlin, erm..." Volo said. "Bahh. You broke 'im!" Gribbo said. "Wait! Wait! Dror Ragzlin, we... pray... we..." Volo said. "C'mon pigeon. Back to your cage," the goblin said. "Now look what you've done!" Volo said.

The party followed Gribbo and Volo...

"Oi! Ain't no party in 'ere - we're doing the Absolute's work. State yer business. Now," Warrior Trinzas said. "I've got an audience with the one in charge," Tiff said. "Right. Well. You ain't the first foreign type, I s'pose. Gonna 'ave to be a bit more specific though, mate - Absolute's got a few favourites around here. You 'ere to see Priestess Gut, Boss Ragzlin, or the drow?" "I want to see Priestess Gut." "Do you now? Might feel different once she puts a burnin' brand to ya. She's through the main doors. Just follow the smell of burnt goblin-arse, heh," the goblin said.

 

"Selûne. As if mingling with a horde of goblins wasn't bad enough. Let's do what we have to, then get out of here," Shadowheart said. "Not your usual haunt, I take it," Tiff said. "Quite the understatement, but yes. Let's not linger in this place any more than necessary," she said. 

"Priestes Gut needs to touch you, too - hold out your arm so I can mark your flesh," she said. "I assume this mark has a purpose," Tiff said. "Shows our devotion to the Absolute. These maggots see how strong we are with Her guidance. Whole camp'll be branded soon. An' you should be, too. You ready? Brace yourself - thri'll sting." "Actually, I'd rather not go through with this." "Maybe you don't need it. After all, you're special, ain't you? Like me."

Priestess Gut probes Tiff's mind, tangling his thoughts with hers. A familiar sensation - she, too, carries a parasite. Darkness seems to swallow the temple, leaving Tiff with a vision of the goblin priestess, receiving instruction from a handsome young man. One of the Chosen... The vision dissolves away. The tiefling bard stands before the goblin priestess in the temple once again. He pushes deeper into her mind. Her faith floods into him - a tide of shuddering ecstasy. Her tadpole nestles within that mania, secure... hidden.

"I feel you in there, digging around. Works both ways. And I saw some weird shadows swimming around in your head just now. Maybe I can help you with that. Us True Souls got to look out for one another. Of course. Don't want this rabble interfering with True Soul business. Let's go to my chapel," Priestess Gut said.

Tiff and the goblin priestess entered her quarters alone. Only Tiff returned...

"There you are. Glad you're all right. What happened in there?" Karlach said. "Priestess Gut wasn't as friendly as she seemed. I had to kill her," Tiff said. "I'm sure you had a good reason. Gods rest her. There are enough Absolutists in this place to fill a reserve trench. One of 'em must have something interesting to say, right?"

"The Blade of Frontiers. Thought I'd shaken you after the mind flayer ship. But you just can't get enough of me, can you," Karlach said. "Karlach. Advocatus diaboli. The stink of Avernus," Wyll said. "The Blade of Frontiers, hero of the Sword Coast. Have I got that right?" Tiff said. "Pride of the Coast, in the flesh. And you've got-" Wyll said.

A great fire roars through Tiff - the fire of the First Hell. He is the Blade of the Forontiers, racing through the wates of Avernus. Just ahead, a diabolical figure - red skin, single curled horn - blazes with flame, bloodied greataxe held high. He chases the fiend, ignited with rancour. She is an infernal devil, a threat to the living - evil incarnate.

"Your ally's a fraud - a soldier in the Archdevil Zariel's army. Either I cut her down, or she burns the sword Coast to ash," Wyll said. "I've tried to tell you - I'm not what you think I am. I'm - ngh!" Karlach said. 

Another vision. Karlach's blade raised, slicing through devils - Zariel's servants - as her eyes dart around, seeking escape. The man shudders with Karlach's desperation. She is a victim of the Blood War, not an agent of it.

"By Balduran's helm, I - no. I will not be tricked!" Wyll said. "You saw the truth. I may be an effective soldier, but I never wanted to serve Zariel. Legged it away from her the first chance I got," Karlach said. "And yet you served." "Stand down. You saw what I saw - Karlach is not a danger," Tiff said.

The man catches his breath, and his lips straighten. Sheer dread twists his face.

"No. Devils can not be trusted!" Wyll said. "Gods, you're stubborn. Karlach's not a devil, and you know it," Tiff said. "Would you listen to sense? This doesn't have to end badly - for either of us. You know monsters, right? Better than anyone. Look into my eyes. Can't you see I'm not what you think?" Karlach said. "Shit. You really are no devil, are you? I've... I've been deceived," Wyll said. "Thank the gods. Thought I was going to have to take your head." "You would've died in the attempt. But - there have been enough threats today. Truce?" "I'll do you one better: allies. We're looking to get rid of these parasites for good - and ruin some bastards' days while we're at it. Sounds like your kind of venture," Karlach said. "I've not grown any tentacles yet, thank Balduran - but luck won't be on our side forever. Yes, you have my blade - your leader willing, of course," Wyll said. "Well, soldier? What's the word?" Karlach said.

"The more the merrier, as they say," Tiff said. "Heyy!" Karlach said. "Well met. And - a thousand sorries. I've pledged my life to protecting the meek from monsters - but tonight, I was the rampaging beast. I see the good in you, Karlach. I promise not to lose sight of it, even when the Hells burn hottest," Wyll said. "Hmph - the famous Blade of Frontiers, in the flesh. Clever, this hero act you've got going," Shadowheart said. "'Hero', 'Blade' - names strangers gave me. My friends call me 'Wyll.'" "Excellent. If we ever become friends, I'll know what to call you," she said.
