After a few minutes somebody has already taken their drink orders and left two menus. 

"The selection of entrèes looks really excellent," susan said. "It sure does," Max said. "I think I'll start with a light salad and sole as main course." "Their fish dishes are supposed to be very good." "That's settled then. Let's make a toast!" she said. "To good food and good music." "Good food and good music!"

"Would you like to order?" the waiter said. "Yes please. I'd like the Salade nicoise and the Sole meunière, please," Susan said. "Excellent. And you, sir?" "The scallops and veal for me, please. And we're going to see a show tonight at half past eight, will we be able to finish our meals in time?" Max said. "Of course, sir, not a problem," the waiter said. 

"You said you used to go out much more?" Max said. "True. When your dad and I were still together we went to the theater quite regularly," Susan said. "What changed?" "We had you and the girls, which took a toll on the time we got to spend on ourselves. And then the divorce happened and that pretty much ended my whole interest in doing anything fun for a long while." "That sucks," he said.

They find their places in the hall. It's clearly not the best spot and they have to make an effort to see the stage.

"I should have booked more expensive seats," Max said. "Don't worry, I once sat behind a marble column," Susan said. "That must have been disappointing." "I listened more intently to the music, so it wasn't all bad."

There's not much more time to talk as the lights are soon dimmed, the curtain is drawn, and the orchestra begins to play.

From that moment the audience is drawn into the world of Narraboth, Jochanaan, Salome and her parents Herodes and Herodias. At times, the opera is an assualt on the sense, sweeping harmonies make way for sharply dramatic attacks and has Max on the edge of his seat. Susan clearly loves every moment of it.

"Salome knows what she wants, doesn't she?" Max said. "She sure does!" Susan said.

As the story unfolds you can tell why this opera caused such a scandal back in the day. The overt eroticism of it all must have shocked the public.

As Salome performs her famous veil dance in front of her lusting step-father, several gasps erupt from the audience.

Salome's dance for Herodes is more of a lap-dance you'd commonly encounter in a strp club in this modern staging of the opera. Little by little, the soprano loses more and more of her clothing, until she is fully nude at the feet of her king.

After the erotic dance, the opera launches its disturbing finale. Still naked, Salome demands the beheading of Jochanaan and declares her love for the severed head after the deed is done. The music shifts from tenderness to glowering rage and ends in dissonance as Salome whispers her last words and is killed by the king's guardsmen. The curtain falls and after a brief silence thunderous applause ensues. The performers bow and some people rise from their seats as the soprano who played Salome takes the forefront.

"That was quite something," Max said. "You could say that," Susan said. "Would you like to have a drink with me? Talk about what we've just seen." "The night is young! Let's go for it. I have to use the bathroom first, back in a minute."

"Max?" "Hi, Iris," he said. "I didn't think I'd find you here. Did you like the opera?" she said. "This is my fist time, I came with somebody else." "Yes, I thought I saw you with a woman earlier." They find a nice bar near the opera and order some drinks.

"So. How was your first opera experience?" Susan said. "It was a really wild ride, but I think I enjoyed it," Max said. "You think?" "My head is still spinning from that last scene." "I know what you mean. The shivers went down my spine when she declared her love for Jochanaan. I really felt sorry for her, despite the monstous things she did," she said. "I think they hit the right balance, with the minimalistic sets and the old-fashioned costumes." "Yes, it kinda worked, didn't it? And the singing was phenomenal. I'm really glad you were with me this evening to share this moment. It's something special when everything clicks during a performance." "I'm still a little confused about some of the story's aspect. The family tree in particular. Salome was the daughter of king Herodes?" he said. "Stepdaughter if I remember correctly and her uncle." "Wow." "It gets complicated, because Herodes' wife is also his sister-in-law..." Susan said. "That's why Jochanaan had such a stick up his butt about it all." "Yup, he didn't like that family one bit." "A little prudish, don't you think?" Max said. "What do you mean?" "Well, the story is based on the tale from the bile, so it's bound to be moralistic. But I'm not sure if it rings true in this day and age." "Do you really think so?" she said. "Yes, I strongly believe in personal freedom and Salome seems an excellent example to me." "But she ordered the execution of Jochanaan because she couldn't get him?!" "That was extreme, monstous even, to use your own words. But the opera is a work of fiction, based on a morality tale. I think that, in essence, Salome should be allowed to be a free spirit. If she wants to dance to her king and father, seduce him, let her. As long as both parties consent... Sorry, did I shock you? That was not my intention," he said. 

"Actually, no. I didn't think we'd have a conversation like this, that's all," Susan said. "But you don't agree?" Max said. "I'm not sure if Salome is the right example in this case, but I like your characterization of a person as a free spirit, allowed to do anything with anyone, as long as there's consent." "exactly that!" "And it shows that there's a depth to you that I didn't know existed. And I like it," she said. 

The bottle of wine they ordered is empty before they know it. Another one appears on the table. Max notices that Susan is laughing more readily and seems more relaxed after their talk.

"Susan?" he said. "What's the matter, dear?" she said. "There's been something on my mind since our holiday. It's bothering me a little bit."

"God... Oh... Shit... You noticed, didn't you? I didn't mean to... God, this is so embarrassing," Susan said. "We were both there, so don't feel embarrassed," Max said. A little panicked, they run in the opposite direction. Bella is still laughing nervously about what just happened. When they've run for a few blocks they stop to catch their breath.
