First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the wonderful world of TES Skyrim. You know it by now, click the thumbnail to view the full-size screenhot and click the link to view the hidden screenshot I can't have displaued here. Have fun and enjoy the story. Let us begin...

My name is Bronkah Dovahkiir. This is my story. It Begins where it might have ended -- if fate had not intervened...
The Imperials had caught Ulfric Stormcloak, Jarl of Windhelm and leader of the rebellion. The civil war could have ebded this day. But the black dragon had other ideas...

Here we were on the road to Helgen, to our execution and on to Sovngarde...
"Sic transit gloria Imperii - So passes the glory of the Empire", I thought to myself.

I was called up to the block after the brave Stormcloak Soldier. But then, out of seemingly nowhere...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20170902215919-1

The dragon saved my Life, but I was far from safe yet...

I followed Ralof, the Stormcloak Soldier into the keep...

We made it out together. Now we were on the road to the village of Riverwood...

"Something's wrong with the moondial here. Some of the crests are missing and the dial is askew. I didn't even know the crests could be removed. Maybe my mother's trying to tell us something?" Serana said. "What's so special about the moondial?" I wondered. "Well, as far as I know it's the only one in existence. The previous owners of the castle had a sundial in the courtyard, and obviously that didn't appeal to my mother. She persuaded an elven artisan to make some improvements. Yu can see the plates that show the phases of the moons, Masser and Secunda."

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200808095555-1

"Does it work?" I wondered. "That's the thing... what's the point of a moondial? I always wondered why she didn't just have the whole thing ripped out. But she loved it. I guess it's like having a piece of art, if you're into that sort of thing," Serana said. "So what exactly am I doing to it?" "Hard to say. Maybe if we found the missing crests, we could figure it out." "What happened to the castle courtyard?" I said. "If I had to guess, I'd say the moment mother fled the castle, father went on a rampage. Knowing him, anything at all that reminded him of her was just destroyed." "Then he just walled it off." "It appears that way. I suppose he wanted to put the past behind him. Perhaps if he had spent more time with us, he would have recognized the beauty for himself. Look around for the missing crests. Even in this mess, they should stick out," she said.

Serana stayed behind while I went inside one of the ruined towers. I came back empty-handed...

I found the first of the missing creats in the ingredient garden. After placing it back in its place on the moondial, I found the second crest. One more to go...

"Very clever, mother. Very clever. I've never been in those tunnels before, but I'd bet they'd run right under the courtyard and into the tower ruins. Well, at least we're getting closer. Let's go," Serana said.

Serana found a bench and sat down a while...
"Do you know this place?" I wondered. "I had always assumed that the tower was completely destroyed inside. My mother kept this a secret, even from me. She must have been up to something she thought was dangerous," she said. "Did your mother keep gargoyles here?" "Not that I ever saw. My mother had a bit of a thing for magical constructs. Not... not what you're thinking. She just found them fascinating. Turns out my mother was sneakier than I thought. I wonder what she's hiding?"
We continued on our way...

I wonder what Vilja... or any of the other women would have to say about this place...

Aedra and Daedra
The designations of Gods, Demons, Aedra, and Daedra, are universally confusing to the layman. They are often used interchangeably.
Aedra" and "Daedra" are not relative terms. They are Elvish and exact. Azura is a Daedra both in Skyrim and Morrowind. "Aedra" is usually translated as "ancestor," which is as close as Cyrodilic can come to this Elven concept. "Daedra" means, roughly, "not our ancestors." This distinction was crucial to the Dunmer, whose fundamental split in ideology is represented in their mythical genealogy.
Aedra are associated with stasis. Daedra represent change.
Aedra created the mortal world and are bound to the Earth Bones. Daedra, who cannot create, have the power to change.
As part of the divine contract of creation, the Aedra can be killed. Witness Lorkhan and the moons.
The protean Daedra, for whom the rules do not apply, can only be banished.

Did I say these gargoyeles were a pest...?

I don't know how long we had been searching now, but it seemed Serana and I were no closer to our goal...

I was wondering if we'd ever find what we were looking for. I missed the women I left behind at home. This would've been more fun with Vilja and company, but I reckon it was a good decision to leave them behind. If Serana's father would have found out where we were, our expedition would certainly have been cut short... by my head.

"I don't think we've reached the top yet. I'd bet there's some kind of secret passage around here," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013507-1

Indeed there was. The passage opened as I instinctively turned a candle holder.
"Leave it to my mother... always smarter than I gave her credit for," she said.
I stepped through with Serana close behind...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 Empty Re: The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story

Post by Wotan Mon Sep 13, 2021 5:20 am

Finally, we seemed to make some progress...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013538-1The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013618-1The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013623-1The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013649-1

"I knew she was deep into necromancy. I mean, she taught me everything I know. But I had no idea she had a setup like this. Look at all this. She must have spent years collecting these components. And what's this thing? I'm not sure about this circle, but it's obviously... something," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013726-1

"Let's take a look around. There has to be something that tells us where she's gone," she continued. "What are we looking for?" I wondered. "My mother was meticulous about her reseach. If we can find her notes, there might be some hints in there. I remember she used to keep a small journal. See if you can dig it up."
Where would she keep her journal? Maybe the bookshelf...?

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825013850-1

27th Last Seed
Harkon's shortsightedness is becoming a serious problem. I've warned him time and time again that his foolish prophecy would cast far too much light on our people and yet he refuses to so much listen to a word I say. I've become less a wife and more of an annoyance in his eyes. Devoting attention to my work is the only solace I can find while enduring his ridiculous crusade.
28th Last Seed
I've had a breakthrough today. I was able to attune the portal vessel to the Soul Cairn properly by using a small sample of ingredients.
Although the portal opened only for a few seconds, I'm confident that with the proper formula, it can be sustained indefinitely. I feel like I'm missing a key ingredient, something of sufficient potency that can resist the forces trying to prevent my intrusion. Communing with the Ideal Msters has proved worthless. They speak in riddles and offer no assistance whether I ensure them a steady supply of souls or not. If I'm to escape Harkon's clutches, I need to keep the portal open long enough to carry me away from here... forever if need be.
3rd Hearthfire
I've done it! After wasting thousands of gold coins on components, I've discovered how to sustain the portal. I'm listing the components below without the proper amounts for my own protection. As a secondary precaution, I am combining my own blood into the formula which should prevent anyone from being able to duplicate it and following me into the Soul Cairn.
The formula consists of:
Finely ground Bone Meal
Puriefied Void Salt
Soul gem shards
Using the proper measurements, place above in the silver-lined portal vessel and add blood as a reactive agent.
I will make my way into the Soul Cairn tomorrow after I gather my things and prepare for a potentially lengthy exile. More importantly, I must enact my plans with Serana, and get her to Dimhollow Crypt as soon as possible.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 Empty Re: The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story

"Your mother maintained quite a laboratory," I said. "I had no idea her laboratory even existed. She had an alchemy setup in her drawing room, but nothing that even comes close to what's here," Serana said. "What did she research?" "Looking at the equipment and materials, it looks like she was trying to advance her necromancy." "To what end?" I wondered. "I don't know. certainly not longevity. Kind of a waste of time for a vampire." "I found your mother's notes." "You did? Let me see them..." she said. "What's this Soul Cairn that she mentions?" "I only know what she told me. She had a theory about soul gems. That the souls inside of them don't just vanish when they're used... they end up in the Soul Cairn." "Why did she care where used souls went?" I wondered. "The Soul Cairn is home to very powerful beings. Necromancers send them souls, and receive powers of their own in return. My mother spent a lot of time trying to contact them directly, to travel to the Soul Cairn itself." "If she made it there, we'll find her." "That circle in the center of the room is definitely some type of portal. If I'm reading this right, there's a formula here that should give us safe passage into the Soul Cairn," Serana said. "What do we need?" "A handful of soul gem shards, some finely-ground bonemeal, a good bit of purified void salts... Oh... damn it..." "What's wrong?" I wondered. "We're also going to need a sample of her blood. Which... if we could get that, we wouldn't even be trying to do this in the first place." "You share her blood." "Hmmm. Not bad. We'd better hope that's good enough. Mistakes with these kind of portals can be... gruesome. Anyway, enough of that. Let's get started," she said. "Are all of those ingredients here?" "Oh, definitely. Mother would have plenty of those materials in her laboratory, you just need to find them."

I brought all the ingredients to Serana.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825014854-1

Then the rest is up to me. Are you ready to go? I'm not entirely sure what this thing is going to do when I add my blood," she said. "Can I ask you something first?" I said. "Of course. What is it?" "What will you do if we find your mother?" "I've been asking myself the same thing since we came back to the castle. She was so sure of what we did to my father, I couldn't help but go along with her. I never thought of the cost," she said. "It sounds like she did everything for your sake." "Possibly. I guess even a vampire mother is a mother. she worried about me. About all of us. But she wanted to get me as far away from my father as possible before he really went over the edge." "We won't know until we find her," I said. "Yes, you're right. I'm sorry. I just didn't expect anyone to care how I felt about her. Thank you. Are we ready then?" "Let's get that portal open."

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825014916-1

"All right. Here goes..." Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825014921-1

"By the blood of my ancestors..." Serana said.

"She actually did it... created a portal to the Soul Cairn. Incredible," she said.

"Anything you can tell me about the Soul Cairn?" I said. "The Soul Cairn is a tiny sliver of Oblivion, the realm of the daedra. It's ruled by unseen beings known as the Ideal Masters," Serana said. "Why was your mother so fascinated by it?" "Honestly. I don't know. Necromancers are always interested in souls, though, so that probably has some kind of interest." "What exactly are the Ideal Masters?" I wondered. "Nobody really knows. As far as I've heard, no one seen them and returned to Tamriel to tell about it." "Then how are you sure they even exist?" "I've read stories. Stories about fools that managed to... communicate with them. You give the Ideal Masters souls, they give you poers to summon the undead. It's all very business-like," she said. "Fools? Why do you say that?" "Because most of the storie end with the Ideal Masters duping the necromancers, who end up dead or wishing they were dead."
I tried to enter the Soul Cairn but was forced to retreat...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825015200-1

"That looked painful," Serana said. "It was. What happened?" I said. "It's hard to describe. The Soul Cairn is... well, hungry, for lack of a better word. It's trying to take your life essence as payment." "So there's no way in, then." "There might be, but I don't think you're going to like it. Vampires aren't counted among the living. I could probably go through there without a problem," she said. "Are you saying that I need to become a vampire?" "Not your first choice, I'd guess." "There has to be another way," I said. "Maybe. We could just pay the toll another way. It wants a soul, so we give it a soul. Yours." "Wouldn't that kill me?" "My mother taught me a trick or two. I could partially soul trap you, and offer that gem to the Ideal Masters. It might be enough to satisfy them. It would make you a bit weaker when we travel through the Soul Cairn, but we might be able to fix that once we're inside. Maybe," she said. "Those are my only options?" "I'm sorry. I wish I knew a better way, something that would be easier for you. Just know that... whatever path you choose, I won't think any less of you. Sometimes things just have to be done. I know that better than anybody." "Soul trap me. I won't feel right as a vampire," I said. "Are you sure? I'm willing to do it, but you need to think it through. You'll remain mortal, but you'll find yourself weakened within the Soul Cairn." "I'm ready." "I know this is difficult for you. I hope you trust me. I'd never do anything that could hurt you," she said. "I trust you completely," I said. "Thank you. Let's not waste any more time then. I promise to make this as painless as possible. Hold still."

"Lets go. My mother must be waiting on the other side of that thing," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20200825015753-1

"I'd heard stories about the Soul Cairn, but never thought I'd see it myself. So far it's... about what I imagined," Serana said.

"Look at this place. I can't imagine choosing to come here. My mother must have been terrified," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210911175657-1

"Ugh. The smell here... Let's try to handle this quickly," Serana said.
A soul spoke as we approached...
"Want my advice? Never welch on a bargain with the Ideal Msters... they don't take it very well," it said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210911175806-1

"Look at the sky. What kind of place is this? You'd think a vampire would be right at home in this place. You'd be wrong. Let's just find my mother and get out of here, quickly," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210911175844-1

Another soul spoke as we got close...
"I can't remember how long I've been here. Has it been a day or a century?"

"Stay away from the crystals or you may find yourself becoming one of us," the soul warned me. "Let's keep moving. I feel like we're being watched," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210911180037-1

We encountered our first enemy. Defeating the undead... thing wasn't much harder here than what we were used to with the draugr in Mundus.
"The air, the ground... this is all wrong," Serana said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210911180117-1

"I feel terrible for the dead who end up here for eternity. Seems awful. Like they're still suffering," Serana said.
We met another soul on the road...
"You must help me find my Arvak. He doesn't deserve to be in a place like this!" "Calm down. Who's Arvak?" I said. "Arvak. My horse. We came to this horrible place together. We were attacked by monsters, so I told him to run. Please, he's such a loyal creature, and he's been running for so long. You have to save him! A place like this will change you..." the soul pleaded. "How can I help him?" I wondered. "Arvak! Arvak, where are you? Arvak, please come back! Come back!" the soul cried.

"This is no place for you," a soul said.
Then I saw the undead horse run past. I followed it, but Arvak disappeared as sudden as he had appeared.

We met Morven Stroud...
"Well, look what we have here... someone with flesh on their bones." "What' the matter with you?" I said. "Let's just say I sold something to a guy who turned out to work for a coven of necromancers. How in the name of Zenithar was I to kmow the ingredients were phony? Do I look like someone that would double-cross a necromancer?" the soul said. "So that's how you got here." "You got it. Horse, wagon and all. Plopped here without so much as a word. I used to be one of th best traders in High Rock, you know. People would track me down just to see what I had for sale." "Got anything left?" I said. "Very funny. And what exactly are you going to pay with? Take a look around. Gold doesn't exactly win any friends around here." "There must be something you want." "I'll tell you what. I appreciate what you're trying to do, so I'll play along. The only thing I see around here in abudance are soul husks. You know, those ugly fungus-looking things growing out of the ground. bring me say... twenty-five of them, and you can rummage through what was left on my cart," the soul said. "Fair enough. What do you have?" "Odds and ends I've gathered over the years. Well, used to gather before all of this nonsense happened to me. Tell me what you're looking for and maybe we can make a deal... if you have the husks." "I don't have 25 husks," I said. "No husks, no sale. Guess you have some scavenging to do."

"Why can't I just die? I fear I'm cursed to walk this desolate land forever," a soul said.

Serana and I had defeated some kind of guardian.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210916135312-1

"Hm. Did I call it 'The Great Hunt' or was it just 'The Hunt?' Bah, I can't remember!"
The soul noticed us...
"Huh? What do you want?" "What exactly are you doing?" I said. "How does anyone expect me to write my opus with all of these interruptions?" "Opus? What do you mean?" "'What do I mean,' indeed! If I hadn't lost all the pages, I wouldn't be in this predicament and we wouldn't be having this conversation," the soul said. "Let's start from the beginning..." "Very well. I suppose a moment or two of my time couldn't hurt. I am Jiub. Some call me Saint Jiub. Others call me Jiub the Eradicator. Perhaps you've heard of me?" "Nope, never heard of you," I said. "I can't say that I'm surprised by your answer. Until I get my second volume published, no one will ever know of my achievements." "You're talking about a book?" "A book? I'd hardly call a twenty-six volume epic simply a 'book.'Surely you've heard of 'The Rise and Fall of Saint Jiub the Eradicator: Hero of Morrowind and Savior of the Dunmer," he said. "How is your work going so far?" "Terrible, simply terrible. I was in the midst of writing the second volume and they just threw me into this prison. It's unfair!" "Prison? You mean the Soul Cairn?" I said. "Soul what? What in the name of Vivec are you talking about? All I remember is that damn dremora and his minions busting into my home and sending me to their prison." "A dremora captured you?" "Well, I assume so. It cast a spell at me from some kind of strange black crystal. Next thing I knew, I arrived here," Jiub said. "Your soul was trapped." "My what? Wait. That means..." "You're dead," I said. "No... all these wasted months, or has it been years? I don't even remember how much time has passed. Now my work will never see the light of day. My name will be forgotten." "Could I help?" "Perhaps. Do you have a way out of here?" Jiub said. "I do, but you can't leave that way." "Maybe I can't leave, but my writings can. In order to write the second volume of my opus, I need the notes from my first volume. Otherwise I need to do all of this from memory." "How many pages did you lose?" I wondered. "When I was tossed in here I felt myself falling... and I dropped the pages I had been holding. There were ten of them in all. Find them for me, please, I beg you!" Why would a dremora attack you?" "Well, that's a ridiculous question. Everyone traveling through here has said that the Oblivion Gates have been opened all over Tamriel," Jiub said. "That was... a bit before my time. Some two hundred years ago. The Nerevarine and Martin Septim, the Emperor's bastard son, managed to defeat Dagon in the end. The Amulet of Kings and Martin Septim were destroyed in the process." "Has it been that long? Thanks again for searching. I don't know what I'd do without my pages."

"Mother!"

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210920134057-1

"Maker... it can't be. Serana?" "Is it really you? I can't believe it! How do we get inside? We have to talk," Serana said. "Serana? What are you doing here? Where's your father?" "He doesn't know we're here. I don't have time to explain." "I must have failed. Harkon's found a way to decipher the prophecy, hasn't he?" Valerica said. "No, you've got it all wrong. We're here to stop him... to make everything right." "Wait a moment... you've brought a stranger here? Have you lost your mind?" "No, you don't..." Serana said. "You. come forward. I would speak with you. So how' has it come to pass that a vampire hunter is in the company of my daughter. It pains me to think you'd travel with Serana under the guise of her protector in an effort to hunt me down," Valerica said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210920134135-1

"This is no ruse. I want to keep her safe," I said. "Coming from one who murders vampires as a trade, I find it hard to believe your intentions are noble. Serana has sacrificed everything to prevent Harkon from completing the prophecy. I would have expected her to explain that to you," Valerica said. "That's why I'm here for the Elder Scroll." "You think I'd have the audacity to place my daughter in that tomb for the protection of her Elder Scroll alone? The scrolls are merely a means to an end. The key to the Tyranny of the Sun is Serana herself." "What do you mean?" I wondered. "When I fled Castle Volkihar, I fled with two Elder Scrolls. The scroll I presume you found with Serana speaks of Auriel and his arcane weapon, Auriel's Bow. The second scroll declares that 'The Blood of Coldharbour's Daughter will blind the eye of the Dragon.'" "How dooes Serana fit in?" "Like myself, Serana was human once. We were devout followers of Molag Bal. Tradition dictates the females be offered to Molag Bal on his summoning day. Few survive the ordeal. Those that do emerge as a pure-blooded vampire. We call such confluences 'Daughters of Coldharbour.'" Valerica said. "Serana underwent this ritual willingly?" "It was expected of her, just as it was expected of me. Being selected as an offering to Molag Bal is an honour. She wouldn't have dared turn her back on that." "The Tyranny of the Sun requires serana's blood?" I said. "Now you're beginning to see why I wanted to protect Serana, and why I've kept the other Elder Scroll as far from her as possible." "Are you saying Harkon means to kill her?" "If Harkon obtained Auriel's Bow and Serana's blood was used to taint the weapon, the Tyranny of the Sun would be complete. In his eyes, she'd be dying for the good of all vampires," Valerica said. "I would never allow that to happen." "And how exactly do you plan on stopping him?" "I'll kill Harkon," I said. "If you believe that, then you're a bigger fool than I priginally suspected. Don't you think I weighed that option before I rnacted my plans?" "And Serana's opinion in this?" "You care nothing for Serana or our plight. Whether or not you've become one of us in order to survive the Soul Cairn, you're still a vampire hunter at heart. You're here because we're abominations in your mind. Evil creatures that need to be destroyed," Valerica said. "Serana believes in me, why don't you?" "Serana? This stranger aligns himself with those that would hunt you down and slay you like an animal, yet I should entrust you to him?" Valerica said. "This 'stranger' has done more for me in the brief time I've known him than you've done in centuries!" Serana said. "How dare you! I gave up everything I cared about to protect you from that fanatic you call a father!" "Yes, he's a fanatic... he's changed. But he's still my father. Why can't you understand how that makes me feel?" Serana said. "Oh, Serana. If you'd only open your eyes. The moment your father discovers your role in the prophecy, that he needs your blood, you'll be in terrible danger." "So to protect me you decided to shut me away from everything I cared about? You never asked me if hiding me in that tomb was the best course of action, you just expected me to follow you blindly. Both of you were obsessesd with your own paths. Your motivations might have been different, but in the end, I'm still just a pawn to you, too. I want us to be a family again. But I don't know if we can ever have that. Maybe we don't deserve that kind of happiness. Maybe it isn't for us. But we have to stop him. Before he goes too far. And to do that, we need the Elder Scroll," Serana said.
I felt sorry for her.
"I'm sorry, Serana. I didn't know... I didn't see. I've allowed my hatred of your father to estrange us for too long. Forgive me. If you want the Elder Scroll, it's yours. Your intentions are still somewhat unclear to me. But for Serana's sake I'll assist you in any way that I can," Valerica said. "Do you have the Elder Scroll with you?" I wondered. "Yes. I've kept it safely secured here ever since I was imprisoned. Fortunately, you're in a position to breach the barrier that surrounds these ruins." "What do we need to do?" "You need to locate the tallest rocky spires that surround these ruins. At their bases, the barrier's energy is being drawn from unfortunate souls that have been exiled here. Destroy the Keepers that are tending them, and it should bring the barrier down," Valerica said. "We'll return soon." "One more word of warning. There's a dragon that calls itself Durnhevir roaming the Cairn. Be wary of him. The Ideal Masters have charged him with overseeing the Keepers, and will undoubtedly intervene if you're perceived as a threat."

I spotted the soul nearby...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20210920135749-1

"Arvak... You saved him! His soul is free, I can feel it! He's such a loyal beast. Here, I'll teach you how to call him to you. He'll help you get around this wretched place, but I'm sure he'd be much happier someplace sunnier. Goodbye, hero! Take good care of Arvak for me! Such a good horse..." the soul said. "I can't believe we found my mother alive... well, you know what I mean," Serana said.

"The barrier should be gone now. Let's head back," Serana said.
I thought I had found where my soul was kept, but alas... I would regret forgetting the warning to stay away from those crystals. It drained my life force as I got close...

We returned to Serana's mother...
"You managed to destroy all three Keepers? Very impressive," she said. "Are you able to give us the scrol now?" I wondered. "Yes. Please, follow me. Keep watch for Durnheviir. With the prison's barrier down, he's almost certain to investigate," Valerica said. "The sooner we get out of this place, the better," Serana said.

"Come on, she's leading us to the scroll," Serana said.
I turned to Valerica...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211001200928-1

"What makes you say that?" I wondered. "Volumes written on Durnheviir allege that he can't be slain by normal means. It appears they were mistaken. Unless..." she said. "Go on..." "The soul of a dragon is as resilient as its owner's scaly hide. It's possible that your killing blow has merely displaced Durnheviir's physical form while he reconstitutes himself." "How kong will that take?" I wondered. "Minutes? Hours? Years? I can't even begin to guess. I suggest we don't wait to find out. Now, let's get you the Elder Scroll and you can be on your way," Valerica said.

"Now that you've retrieved the Elder Scroll, you should be on your way. If there's anything I can do before you depart, you must let me know," Valerica said. "Can you help me get my soul back?" I wondered. "So my daughter applied some of the lessons I taught her about necromancy, did she? Don't worry, I think I can help you." "Good, I could use all the help I can get." "Your soul essence ws trapped inside a gem. When you and Serana entered the Soul Cairn, it was 'given' to the Ideal Masters as payment. You simply need to retrieve the gem. The moment you touch it, your soul essence will be restored," she said. "Any idea where it could be?" "There's an offering altar not terribly far from here. I'm willing to be that the gem you're looking for is there. Is there anything else? Could be your last chance." "You're staying here?" I said. "I have no choice. As I told you before, I'm a Daughter of Coldharbour. If I return to Tamriel, that increases Harkon's likelyhood of bringing the Tyranny of the Sun to fruition." "We may never return." "After what I've put Serana through, I would understand if she never wished to see me again. I leave the decision in your hands. Remember that Harkon is not to be trusted. No matter what he promises, he'll deceive you in order to get what he wants. And promise me ypou'll keep my daughter safe. She's the only thing of value I have left," Valerica said. "I'm glad we found the scroll, nut I... I wish she could come with us," Serana said.

"Stay your weapons. I would speak with you, Qahnaarin." "I thought you were dead," I said. "Cursed, not dead. Doomed to exist in thi form for eternity. Trapped between laas and dinok, between life and death," the dragon said. "Didn't you try to kill me?" "The hostility was necessary. I was bound to an oath." "Why are we speaking?" I wondered. "I believe in civility among seasoned warriors, and I find your ear worthy of my words. My claws have rended the flesh of innumerble foes, but I have never been felled on the field of battle. I therefore honour-name you 'Qahnaarin,' or Vanquisher in your tongue." "I find you equally worthy." "Your words do me great honour. My desire to speak with you was born from the result of our battle, Qahnaarin. I erely wish to respectfully ask a favour of you," Durnheviir said. "What kind of a favour?" "For countless years I've roamed the Soul Cairn, in unintended service to the Ideal Masters. Before this, I roamed the skies of Tamriel. I desire to return there." "What's stopping you?" I wondered. "I fear that my time here has taken its toll upon me. I share a bond with this dreaded place. If I ventired gar from the Soul Cairn, my strength would begin to wane until I was no more." "How can I help?" "I will place my nme with you and grant you the right to call my name from Tamriel. Do me this simple honour and I will fight at your side as your Grah-Zeymahzin, and teach you my Thu'um," the dragon said. "Just call your name in Tamriel? That's it?" "Trivial in your mind, perhaps. For me, it would mean a great deal. I don't require an answer, Qahnaarin. Simply speak my name to the heavens when you feel the time is right." "How did you end up in the Soul Cairn?" I wondered. "There was a time when I called Tamriel my home, but those days have long since passed. The dovah roamed the skies, vying for their small slices of territory that resulted in immense and ultimately fatal battles." "Were you a part of all that?" "I was. But unlike some of my brethren, I sought solutions outside the norm in order to maintain my superiority. I began to explore what the dovah call 'Alok-Dilon,' the ancient forbidden art that you call necromancy," Durnheviir said. "So you sought the Soul Cairn for answers." "The Ideal Masters assured me that my powers would be unmatched, that I could raise legions of the undead. In return, I was to serve them as a Keeper until the death of the one who calls herself Valerica." "They didn't tell you she was immortal," I said. "I discovered too late that the Ideal Masters favour deception over honour and had no intention of releasing me from my binding. They had control of my mind, but fortunately they coudn't possess my sou." "Is that why you are free now?" I wondered. "Free? No. I have been here too long, Qahnaarin. The Soul Cairn has become a part of what I am. I can never fully call Tamriel my home again, or I would surely perish. I only hope that you will allow me the precious moments of time there through your call," the dragon said.

I recovered my soul, it was time to leave this deadful place. I'm sure Serana agreed with me...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 Empty Re: The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story

Post by Wotan Wed Dec 08, 2021 10:35 pm

I decided it was a good idea to visit the College of Winterhold. In the courtyard we ran into Urag gro-Shub. I immediately spoke to the grumpy old orc...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211101142352-1The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211101142435-1

"I'm looking for an Elder Scroll," I said. "And what do you plan to do with it? Do you even know what you're asking about?" Urag said. "Of course I do. Do you have one here?" "You think that even if I did have one, I would let you see it? It would be kept under the highest security. The greatest thief in the world wouldn't be able to lay a finger on it." "I need to find one and was told that you could help," I said. "I don't know who told you that, but I'll do what I can. What we do have are plenty of books. I'll bring everything we have on them, but it's not much. So don't get your hopes up. It's mostly lies, leavened with rumour and conjecture," he said.

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211101142716-1

Effects of the Elder Scrolls
It is widely known among scholars that the Elder Scrolls entail a certain hazard in their very reading. The mechanism of the effects has, at present, been largely unknown -- theories of hidden knowledge and divine retribution were the subject of idle speculation with little investigation.
I, Justinius Poluhnius, have undertaken to thoroughly document the ailments afflicted by the Elder Scrolls on their readers, though a unified theory of how they manifest continues to elude me and remains a subject for future study.
I have grouped the effects into four, finding that the avenue of experience depends largely upon the mind of the reader. If this is unclear, I hope that a proper dichotomy will lay it plain.

Group the First: The Naifs
For one who has received no training in the history or nature of the Elder Scrolls, the scroll itself is, effectively, inert. No prophecy can be scried nor knowledge obtained. While the scroll will not impart learning to the uninformed, nor will it afflict them in any adverse fashion. Visually, the scroll will appear to be awash in odd lettering and symbols. Those who know their astronomy often claim to recognize constellations in the patterns and connections, but such conjecture is impossible to further investigate since the very nature of this study necessitates unlearned subjects.

Group the Second: The Unguarded Intellects
It is this second group that realizes the greatest danger from attempting to read the scrolls. These are subjects who have an understanding of the nature of the Elder Scrolls and possess sufficient knowledge to actually read what is inscribed there. They have not, however, developed adequate discipline to stave off the mind-shattering effect of having a glimpse of infinity. These unfortunate souls are struck immediately, irrevocably, and completely blind. Such is the price for overreaching one's faculties. It bears mentioning, though, that with the blindness also comes a fragment of that hidden knowledge -- whether the future, the past, or the deep natures of being is dependent on the individual and their place in the greater spheres. But the knowledge does come.

Group the Third: Mediated Understanding
Alone in Tamriel, it would appear that only the Cult of the Ancestor Moth has discovered the discipline to properly guard one's mind when reading the scrolls. Their novitiates must undergo the most rigorous mental cultivation, and they often spend a decade or more at the monastery before being allowed to read their first Elder Scroll. The monks say this is for the initiates' own protection, as they must have witnessed many Unguarded Intellects among their more eager ranks. With appropriate fortitude, these readers also receive blindness, though at a far lesser magnitude than the Unguarded. Their vision fogs slightly, but they retain shape, color, and enough acuity to continue to read mundane texts. The knowledge they gain from the scroll is also tempered somewhat -- it requires stages of meditation and reflection to fully appreciate and express what one saw.

Group the Fourth: Illuminated Understanding
Between the previous group and this one exists a continuum that has, at present, only been traversed by the monks of the Ancestor Moth. With continued readings the monks become gradually more and more blind, but receive greater and more detailed knowledge. As they spend their waking hours pondering the revelations, they also receive a further degree of mental fortitude. There is, for every monk, a day of Penultimate Reading, when the only knowledge the Elder Scroll imparts is that the monk's next reading shall be his last.

For each monk the Penultimate Reading comes at a different and unknowable time -- preliminary work has been done to predict the occurrence by charting the severity of an individual monk's blindness, but all who reach these later stages report that the increasing blindness seems to taper with increased readings. Some pose the notion that some other, unseen, sense is, in fact, continuing to diminish at this upper range, but I shall leave such postulations to philosophers.
To prepare for his Ultimate Reading, a monk typically withdraws to seclusion in order to reflect upon a lifetime of revelations and appoint his mind for reception of his last. Upon this final reading, he is forever blinded as sure as those Unguarded ones who raced to knowledge. The Illuminated one, though, has retained his understanding over a lifetime and typically possesses a more integral notion of what has been revealed to him.
It is hoped that this catalog will prove useful to those who wish to further our mortal understanding of the Elder Scrolls. The Moth priests remain aloof about these matters, taking the gradual debilitation that comes with reading as a point of pride. May this serve as a useful starting point for those hoping to take up such study.

Ruminations on the Elder Scroll
by Septimus Signus

Imagine living beneath the waves with a strong-sighted blessing of most excellent fabric. Holding the fabric over your gills, you would begin to breathe—drink its warp and weft. Though the plant-matter fibers imbue your soul, the wretched plankton would pollute the cloth until it stank to heavens of prophecy. This is one manner in which the Scrolls first came to pass, but are we the sea, or the breather, or the fabric? Or are we the breath itself?
Can we flow through the Scrolls as knowledge flows through, being the water, or are we the stuck morass of sea-filth that gathers on the edge?
Imagine, again, this time but different. A bird cresting the wind is lifted by a gust and downed by a stone. But the stone can come from above, if the bird is upside down. Where, then, did the gust come from? And which direction? Did the gods send either, or has the bird decreed their presence by her own mindmaking?
The all-sight of the Scrolls makes a turning of the mind such that relative positions are absolute in their primacy.
I ask you again to imagine for me. This time you are beneath the ground, a tiny acorn planted by some well-meaning Elf-maiden of the woodlands for her pleasure. You wish to grow but fear what you may become, so you push off the water, the dirt, the sun, to stay in your hole. But it is in the very pushing that you become a tree, in spite of yourself. How did that happen?
The acorn is a kind of tree-egg in this instance, and the knowledge is water and sun. We are the chicken inside the egg, but also the dirt. The knowledge from the Scrolls is what we push against to become full-sighted ourselves.
One final imagining before your mind closes from the shock of ever-knowing. You are now a flame burning bright blue within a vast emptiness. In time you see your brothers and sisters, burnings of their own in the distance and along your side. A sea of pinpoints, a constellation of memories. Each burns bright, then flickers. Then two more take its place—but not forever, lest the void fill with rancid light that sucks the thought.
Each of our minds is actually the emptiness, and the learnings of the Scrolls are the pinpoints. Without their stabbing light, my consciousness would be as a vast nothingness, unknowing its emptiness as a void is unknowing of itself. But the burnings are dangerous, and must be carefully tended and minded and brought to themselves and spread to their siblings.
(Note by Ancestor Moth Brother Quintus Nerevelus: Found this at the back of the library stacks behind the Scroll of Rhunen. It had obviously been there a long time, yet the printer's sigil notes its publication date as "4E 195." This is obviously a transcription error. I think.)

"This 'Ruminations' book is incomprihensible," I said. "Aye, that's the work of Septimus Signus. He's the world's master of the nature of Elder Scrolls, but... well. He's been gone for a long while. Too long," Urag said. "He's dead?" "Oh no. I hope not. But even I haven't seen him in years, and we were close. Became obsessed with the Dwemer. Took off north saying he had found some old artifact. Haven't seen him since. Somewhere in the ice fields, if you want to try to find him."

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211101143129-1

"Does it bother you that we're working against your father?" I asked. "I can't say it surprises me. I kind of figured we were heading in for this some day. I just didn't know when," serana said. "Will it be hard for you if we have to kill him?" "If? I've been assuming that's where this is going. I've been trying to make my peace with it. Come on. We can talk about this another time."

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 Empty Re: The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story

Post by Wotan Thu Feb 03, 2022 8:29 am

After all the adventuring I had done with Serana, I felt I needed some rest. And of course I missed the women at home, so I decided we should go back to Lakeview. When we got back, I met someone I had not seen in a long time - Rigmor - but, Aster, my son was no where to be seen. And Rigmor was in no state to give straight answers...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211224104030-1

Speaking to my adoptive daughter I learned that Aster had just left with M'rissi and their daughter. Where they were going she didn't know. I knew Aster and M'rissi had made a home for themselves in Honeyside in Riften though, so they were likely going back home. But, if not, maybe one of my women would know more. First, though, Rigmor had to settle in. We arranged a bed for her in the basement sleeping quarters...

The Shezarrine - a Skyrim story - Page 13 20211224104401-1

Rigmor was a beautiful young woman when you looked at her, but when you saw the scars on her back it wasn't hard to understand why she was so distant. She had been through a lot.

I went to the pool and found Tindra. She told me more about what Aster had said when he had dropped Rigmor off. Apparently he was aiming to go after the bastard who had hurt Rigmor so much.
Tindra was sex starved and yearned for my flesh. I had missed her too and was eager to please her. Sindra looked on while we did it by the pool. Even Rigmor caught a glimpse of us, well we were hard to miss.

Vilja returned from a shopping trip to town and made us dinner. After dinner, she was eage to be pleased by her husband. I was never a man to let my females down. We went down in the basement for our coupling session...

https://ibb.co/h1rrMjH

Sofia too had missed me and the sex, though she didn't want to admit it. She had always been sex fixated since before we met at the Whiterun stables. She was always up for intercourse, provided she had a dose of contaceptive ready of course. Sofia was always adamant not to get pregnant again. One baby was enough for her...

I spent a few days at Lakeview, enjoying some rest and relaxation pleasing and benf pleased by my women. But adventure loomed and I soon left again. When I did I had Rigmor and Serana in tow. We were headed for Solitude...
